n the early 90s, Bruce Saunders started a movie night at the Eric Martin Pavilion, the psychiatric ward of the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria. As a patient there, he’d seen the need for exposure to movies that uplifted, sparked discussion and went beyond simple entertainment. Movie Monday has been going ever since. Bruce curates a wide range of films and invites filmmakers to attend movie nights in person or over the phone for discussions after the screening.
In this episode of Sleepy City, Bruce talks about how Movie Monday got started and what it means to him. We also hear from Katie Sage, Arts Reporter at CFUV and visual artist Liam Lloyd about his own experience with the Eric Martin Pavilion. Crystal Dorval, a musician who performs as White Poppy (and other acts) finishes the episode with a discussion about the intersection of creativity and mental illness.
